Burundi, often referred to as the “Heart of Africa”, is profoundly intertwined with the cultivation of coffee, characterised by favourable terroir and a climate conducive to coffee growth. This coffee originates from the Masama washing station, which is situated in the Muramvya district of central Burundi. This washing station was established in the year 2014 and currently processes the harvests of 623 smallholder coffee farmers, members of the Twiyunge Cooperative. Notably, 30% of these smallholders are women. The Twiyunge Cooperative was founded in 2007 in the Bururi province and its name holds a meaningful connotation, translating to “be together for the coffee”. This Bourbon lot was harvested using the selective picking method. Subsequently, the coffee undergoes a hand-sorting procedure, before natural processing, during which it is dried in a controlled humidity environment. Afterwards, the coffee is transported to the dry mill where it is milled and sorted for any potential faults. Finally, it is weighed before being bagged for export. The cooperative provides comprehensive training to the head manager of the washing station and ensures quality control standards are maintained through regular supervision. Additionally, they promote agroforestry by planting trees in their coffee plantations.
