In this video, I'm going to give you my top five tips for branding
00:00:03:19 - 00:00:07:07
your new cafe or reviving your existing cafe.
00:00:07:20 - 00:00:08:10
We'll discuss
00:00:08:10 - 00:00:11:29
what the difference is between branding and logos, whether you can do it yourself,
00:00:12:06 - 00:00:14:10
or if you really do need to hire some help.
00:00:14:11 - 00:00:15:04
We're going to talk about
00:00:15:04 - 00:00:19:01
how to plan ahead, designing something that you and your customers will love.
00:00:19:11 - 00:00:20:08
And we also want to keep
00:00:20:08 - 00:00:23:26
it really practical and really flexible for the life of your business.
00:00:24:08 - 00:00:28:03
And I do want to talk about what you can expect to spend on this
00:00:28:03 - 00:00:28:18
branding
00:00:32:15 - 00:00:34:11
Now, to give you some context of why I feel
00:00:34:11 - 00:00:38:10
I can help you with your branding, I'll give you some of my background.
00:00:38:21 - 00:00:41:10
I guess I've always worked in coffee, but for some time,
00:00:41:10 - 00:00:44:11
I did work for an agency as a full time graphic designer.
00:00:44:20 - 00:00:48:10
I got to work with a range of businesses and do their branding
00:00:48:18 - 00:00:50:25
and I just had to make sure it was really effective
00:00:51:00 - 00:00:52:24
and make sure they got the most out of it.
00:00:52:24 - 00:00:55:05
So Artisti was actually one of my clients.
00:00:55:05 - 00:00:58:20
I worked with Luke and the team to develop the brand that you see today.
00:00:58:28 - 00:01:01:25
Now we rolled and we rolled out a new look and feel
00:01:02:08 - 00:01:06:19
that would transpose across packaging, signage, print material
00:01:06:21 - 00:01:11:25
marketing and ultimately be replicated in all of our café partners locations.
00:01:12:01 - 00:01:14:12
And we've seen some great success in that so far.
00:01:14:21 - 00:01:18:20
Now, eight months into launching the new branding, I joined the Artisti team
00:01:18:29 - 00:01:22:13
and I've been working with the team here, rolling it out and having some
00:01:22:18 - 00:01:24:13
great success in that as well.
00:01:24:13 - 00:01:29:12
So our branding, I feel, is still timeless and strong strong as ever, really.
00:01:29:12 - 00:01:33:01
And the forethought that went into it was well worth the time, effort
00:01:33:08 - 00:01:34:05
and investment.
00:01:34:05 - 00:01:37:04
Now, Artisti is clearly just that bit bigger than,
00:01:37:21 - 00:01:40:27
say, maybe your cafe, but that's that's fine.
00:01:40:27 - 00:01:43:16
We're still the same. Concepts still apply.
00:01:43:26 - 00:01:46:23
So the cafes that I've designed branding for
00:01:46:24 - 00:01:50:12
have still been able to create a really strong identity for their business
00:01:50:16 - 00:01:52:10
and seen massive benefits too.
00:01:52:10 - 00:01:54:04
So let's take you to
00:01:55:04 - 00:01:56:21
answering the first question.
00:01:56:21 - 00:01:59:15
What is the difference between branding and a logo?
00:01:59:22 - 00:02:03:03
Now, your logo is really just a symbol of your business
00:02:03:03 - 00:02:05:09
that people can instantly recognize you by.
00:02:05:09 - 00:02:06:15
It's not your branding.
00:02:06:15 - 00:02:07:14
Your branding is all
00:02:07:14 - 00:02:10:26
of the design elements that come together to reflect the vision of your business.
00:02:11:01 - 00:02:14:03
And it gives the viewer a sense of who you are and what you stand for.
00:02:14:06 - 00:02:18:13
Now it's the language you use online and in your print material.
00:02:18:13 - 00:02:22:07
It's the vibe of the cafe, and it's why people feel connected and drawn to you
00:02:22:08 - 00:02:24:06
that is your branding as a whole.
00:02:24:06 - 00:02:28:04
Now, knowing that, let's go to my top five things
00:02:28:04 - 00:02:31:29
to think about when branding your new or existing cafe.
00:02:32:01 - 00:02:34:21
Now, number one, do you need a hire a designer
00:02:35:01 - 00:02:37:23
and how to get the most out of one if you really do.
00:02:37:23 - 00:02:41:00
Now you've really got to check if you have the skills to design
00:02:41:00 - 00:02:42:18
everything that you'll need.
00:02:42:18 - 00:02:46:01
There's definitely a skill to using like Adobe programs and designing.
00:02:46:06 - 00:02:48:13
It is much harder than it looks.
00:02:48:13 - 00:02:52:21
There are websites like Fiverr and Canva that can be really useful
00:02:53:23 - 00:02:57:02
and they're a much more affordable way to have a have a logo designed
00:02:57:02 - 00:03:00:26
for you or to use some of the templates and move forward from that.
00:03:00:26 - 00:03:02:10
So I'm not opposed to them,
00:03:02:10 - 00:03:05:28
but they have a different outcome and some some challenges of their own.
00:03:06:24 - 00:03:10:01
But that might be all you get from those
00:03:10:01 - 00:03:12:15
and you might just get the logo and that's, that's kind of it.
00:03:12:15 - 00:03:14:24
And it might only get you so far.
00:03:14:25 - 00:03:18:28
Now spending lots of time doing it yourself could also be,
00:03:19:25 - 00:03:22:05
you know, not a great use of your time.
00:03:22:05 - 00:03:25:03
So paying someone else to free you up to do what you do best.
00:03:25:12 - 00:03:27:21
Might be a better use of your personal time.
00:03:27:23 - 00:03:31:20
So I'd say starting today, start doing your research
00:03:31:27 - 00:03:35:15
find logos that you love, find all the images that you
00:03:35:25 - 00:03:38:20
have a passion for, and you want to start to put together
00:03:38:20 - 00:03:40:12
a vision board of branding that you love.
00:03:41:19 - 00:03:44:01
If you do engage with a designer, these references
00:03:44:05 - 00:03:48:04
will be a massive help and we will be part of the breif briefing process.
00:03:48:04 - 00:03:51:08
Now, in my opinion, hiring and professional designer
00:03:51:22 - 00:03:52:28
is really going to help you
00:03:52:28 - 00:03:57:20
if you want to be really consistent and ensure you have all of the file types
00:03:57:20 - 00:04:01:10
you need for the different areas you'll need the designs for.
00:04:02:03 - 00:04:03:26
Now that lends me to my second point.
00:04:03:26 - 00:04:08:04
Let's start thinking about what you'll need to design so that you can plan ahead.
00:04:09:01 - 00:04:11:06
Some of the basic design needs for CAFE
00:04:11:06 - 00:04:15:24
would be a logo, signage, menus, social media,
00:04:15:28 - 00:04:20:14
fliers, business cards, branded products like paper cups.
00:04:20:14 - 00:04:23:29
You've got merchandise, you've got uniforms, website
00:04:24:18 - 00:04:27:21
marketing, both online and print, and there's heaps more.
00:04:27:21 - 00:04:29:18
There's so much that you'll end up doing
00:04:29:18 - 00:04:32:18
and wanting to have the resources to be able to achieve that yourself.
00:04:32:18 - 00:04:36:22
Now you need to ensure that you that your branding is really practical
00:04:36:22 - 00:04:40:01
and be applied and can be applied to all of these areas really easily.
00:04:40:09 - 00:04:41:16
Now, at some point,
00:04:41:16 - 00:04:45:03
you won't want to pay a designer to put your logo on everything for you.
00:04:45:13 - 00:04:48:26
You need to make sure that a good designer can supply all of your branding elements
00:04:48:26 - 00:04:50:05
and a range of formats.
00:04:50:05 - 00:04:54:07
Make sure they give you a JPEG, a PNG an EPS a PDF,
00:04:54:20 - 00:04:58:14
for all the different things you'll need over time with all of the different
00:04:58:14 - 00:05:02:24
variations of colors in white in reversed, so that you can do
00:05:03:02 - 00:05:06:23
some of the work yourself save yourself some money, and ultimately
00:05:07:26 - 00:05:08:10
ensure that
00:05:08:10 - 00:05:11:12
you're getting a great result from someone that you're paying.
00:05:11:14 - 00:05:13:10
Getting everything that you need to move forward.
00:05:13:10 - 00:05:16:08
Now, the last thing you want to do is design is to pay
00:05:16:09 - 00:05:19:02
a designer to create a Facebook profile for you.
00:05:19:10 - 00:05:20:11
Hiring a designer
00:05:20:11 - 00:05:23:28
will ensure you've really got everything you need to be self-sufficient.
00:05:24:03 - 00:05:25:18
But keep yourself involved.
00:05:25:18 - 00:05:28:13
Keep them involved should you need to do any major projects.
00:05:28:13 - 00:05:31:02
Now someone like one of our customers,
00:05:31:13 - 00:05:35:08
one of our CAFE partners, called BUYI espresso bar I worked closely with.
00:05:35:08 - 00:05:39:09
Now even their name goes back to the local traditional language,
00:05:39:19 - 00:05:42:15
and that was something that they connected
00:05:42:15 - 00:05:45:09
strongly with their branding connects
00:05:45:20 - 00:05:50:08
some of the indigenous symbols plus the movement of the local waves.
00:05:50:08 - 00:05:52:21
They've had that transposed
00:05:52:21 - 00:05:55:23
painted on the building they've had that on obviously cards,
00:05:55:23 - 00:06:00:07
and now they're doing merchandise and they're selling that merchandise
00:06:00:07 - 00:06:03:15
as a something into the community that people are connecting with.
00:06:03:15 - 00:06:05:00
And they've had some
00:06:05:01 - 00:06:08:05
great results from that, and they're continuing to build their own
00:06:08:05 - 00:06:11:23
brand and making sure that they've got everything they need to do so.
00:06:11:23 - 00:06:14:28
Now let's not forget who we're designing for.
00:06:15:03 - 00:06:18:29
So when you're designing your branding, don't lose sight of the fact that it needs
00:06:18:29 - 00:06:20:14
to appeal to your target audience.
00:06:20:14 - 00:06:23:27
So if you've got a certain clientele and you don't want to lose them,
00:06:24:04 - 00:06:26:29
you may need to consider them when designing your branding.
00:06:27:03 - 00:06:28:29
If you're designing a new café
00:06:28:29 - 00:06:31:28
and you've got a vision for it, commit to your style and own it.
00:06:31:28 - 00:06:34:16
You just don't want to be second guessing yourself later.
00:06:34:21 - 00:06:36:19
Now, a word of advice.
00:06:36:19 - 00:06:38:23
Make sure you love your branding, because if you don't,
00:06:39:00 - 00:06:40:11
you just won't want to use it.
00:06:40:11 - 00:06:43:14
So it's worth taking the time to ensure you love it.
00:06:43:28 - 00:06:45:01
Point number four.
00:06:45:01 - 00:06:47:13
Keep it practical and keep it flexible.
00:06:47:16 - 00:06:51:24
This has always been something that I've been applied when I've done design
00:06:51:24 - 00:06:54:29
and now it works here with Artisti because we we have the
00:06:55:09 - 00:06:58:29
the design capabilities, but we also have the flexibility in our branding,
00:06:59:04 - 00:07:01:28
both for the monogram, our logo in different formats.
00:07:02:23 - 00:07:06:13
And that allows us to be practical and flexible when we want to do things
00:07:06:16 - 00:07:09:28
really quickly on the fly or think about big projects ahead of time.
00:07:09:28 - 00:07:12:21
Now, cafes move really quickly and can often
00:07:13:03 - 00:07:16:26
find that they need things like signage and menus updated so quickly.
00:07:16:26 - 00:07:19:28
You need to ensure that you've chosen a branding style that
00:07:20:26 - 00:07:23:19
can be flexible adaptable to your needs really quickly.
00:07:24:07 - 00:07:27:21
You'll only be frustrated if there's a slow turnaround on
00:07:27:21 - 00:07:31:26
time for designers or printers when you're completely reliant on them so
00:07:33:19 - 00:07:34:05
graphics are
00:07:34:05 - 00:07:38:01
great, and that can have a huge impact like illustrations and stuff like that.
00:07:38:01 - 00:07:41:28
Just be mindful that you can require designer to make them work in all areas.
00:07:41:28 - 00:07:45:23
So obviously the more skilled you are in that area,
00:07:45:29 - 00:07:47:23
the more you can adapt yourself.
00:07:47:23 - 00:07:51:03
But a simple typography logo can go a long way
00:07:51:09 - 00:07:53:15
and be a really practical option for you.
00:07:54:03 - 00:07:57:15
Now, let's also be mindful that choosing lots of colors
00:07:57:25 - 00:08:01:26
will add costs and result in varying colors by different printers.
00:08:01:26 - 00:08:06:06
For instance, when we're thinking about shirt designs, there's additional costs
00:08:06:12 - 00:08:09:28
that you might incur if you have multiple colors in your logos.
00:08:11:03 - 00:08:13:08
We learnt this when we were outsourcing our own
00:08:13:08 - 00:08:16:27
personal label printing to a company to do bulk printing,
00:08:17:04 - 00:08:19:25
and they seem to get a different color back to us every time
00:08:20:08 - 00:08:23:28
The Fix rather than being a strong red, was more like an awkward orange,
00:08:24:08 - 00:08:27:20
and that was one of the hard lessons we had to learn by sending printing
00:08:27:26 - 00:08:28:19
to other people.
00:08:28:19 - 00:08:31:18
Now we've made that more consistent by
00:08:32:06 - 00:08:36:18
and looking more professional, by starting to use our own labels in-house.
00:08:36:18 - 00:08:40:25
So we've invested in a printer and that could be something for you
00:08:40:25 - 00:08:42:24
that being able to turn around your artwork
00:08:42:24 - 00:08:46:15
and your print material really quickly and having everything you need
00:08:46:20 - 00:08:50:02
in-house could be of great value to you and your business.
00:08:50:02 - 00:08:51:24
Now we also did
00:08:51:24 - 00:08:56:07
choose quite a unique color for our logo, which helps us to stand out in the crowd.
00:08:56:08 - 00:09:00:03
However, we do pay extra for printing, as I have to color match this Pantone.
00:09:00:03 - 00:09:03:04
So again, that is a cost you can avoid if you
00:09:03:04 - 00:09:06:24
if you don't have the budget, and it's just another thing for you to think about.
00:09:07:24 - 00:09:09:22
So consistency
00:09:09:22 - 00:09:13:13
in the use of your colors, your images, your typography and your brand
00:09:13:13 - 00:09:14:20
brand elements
00:09:14:20 - 00:09:18:27
is what really give your branding the longevity and effect you're looking for.
00:09:19:06 - 00:09:22:26
So lastly, how much should I really be spending on my branding?
00:09:22:26 - 00:09:25:21
Now this is the golden question, and the simple answer is
00:09:26:06 - 00:09:27:26
whatever it's worth to you.
00:09:27:26 - 00:09:33:13
Now a simple $200 JPEG logo from Fiverr will only get you so far,
00:09:33:14 - 00:09:37:27
but getting your uncle to design you a logo, give you a font and an icon.
00:09:37:28 - 00:09:41:18
500 bucks could be a good starting point for you and your small cafe.
00:09:41:25 - 00:09:46:04
It's still going to get the doors open and give you something to use.
00:09:46:09 - 00:09:52:00
But maybe depending on where you're up to what you really value in your business.
00:09:52:00 - 00:09:56:09
And branding could be super valuable to you so spending over $1,000 with an agency
00:09:56:15 - 00:09:59:29
to supply a few branding concepts, which would be much more fun.
00:09:59:29 - 00:10:03:24
And they'll supply a range of assets and you can use yourself.
00:10:04:18 - 00:10:07:16
But then the ultimate goal for everyone is to spend
00:10:08:08 - 00:10:10:25
three grand plus with an agency and do some market
00:10:10:25 - 00:10:13:27
research to find out what point of difference you have.
00:10:13:27 - 00:10:17:21
Develop a brief based on your vision board, consulting meetings
00:10:17:21 - 00:10:21:19
plus supply a range of logos in varying formats with brand assets,
00:10:22:04 - 00:10:25:12
and you'll have an amazing experience and you'll be able to portray that
00:10:25:12 - 00:10:26:26
back to your customers.
00:10:26:26 - 00:10:30:18
And this is something that I personally will always enjoy doing.
00:10:31:14 - 00:10:35:07
And you you might be slightly a bit more out of pocket,
00:10:35:07 - 00:10:37:12
but you'll love everything that you produce
00:10:37:25 - 00:10:39:18
and you'll have everything you need to build
00:10:39:18 - 00:10:42:26
a strong brand and a strong identity, and you'll have access to
00:10:42:26 - 00:10:45:28
a range of assets to be consistent for years to come.
00:10:46:02 - 00:10:50:05
Now, in my opinion, branding is really important.
00:10:50:08 - 00:10:54:02
It showcases your individuality and creates a unique identity
00:10:54:02 - 00:10:57:28
for your business that your customers will love and attach themselves to.
00:10:58:07 - 00:11:01:07
It's something I encourage all of our café partners to do.
00:11:01:07 - 00:11:03:25
