Rocket R Nine One - We Unbox, Review and Brew a Coffee
The guys at Espresso Company Australia have sent us the Rocket R Nine One to try out and use for a couple of months so we thought it would be a great idea to do an unboxing and give you all a look at this beautiful machine. The R NINE One has thermal stability through the Rocket Espresso's fully saturated group system, coupled with digital PID temperature control. Pre and Post infusion controlled through a full pressure profiling system, using the 5 preset programmes or via manual control through the Rocket Espresso paddle system.
As you'll see in the video Luke is able to manually control the pressure and record a profile which he is able to play back and repeat. This allows baristas to experiment with pressure profiling and record and repeat the profiles of extractions they are happy with. It's pretty cool tech!

and we get to play with it. So, thanks very much Espresso
0:50
Company Australia for lending us this lovely machine. So, we
0:54
can learn about it and teach you all about it. There's a
0:56
couple of videos we're going to do because this machine has so
0:59
much to offer in the high-end home market.
1:05
So while it's heating up we'll just run through a few of the
1:08
specs for you and what you get in the box you saw that it came
1:12
on a full pallet this thing is a tank it is got the heritage
1:16
of their commercial models that they've crammed it all in to a
1:19
domestic unit it weighs 47 kilos so make sure you do get
1:24
a hand to lift it up and position on your bench because
1:26
it is just too hard and heavy to lift that by itself but that
1:29
does mean that there is amazing quality in there so inside it
1:33
does have you know great components throughout they
1:35
haven't skipped anywhere and they've managed to style it in
1:39
traditional rocket finesse that they just do. I mean, the look
1:44
and feel of these machines is timeless. Uh some of the old
1:47
models 20 years ago are still relevant today. So, it's a real
1:51
credit to look at how well this is manufactured to the styling
1:54
and just the aesthetic aesthetics of it. Um it is a
1:58
big unit. It does sit a little bit larger on the bench but if
2:01
you're looking at any of these machines, they're going to be a
2:04
bit larger because you do have dual boilers in there. You've
2:07
got pressure profiling and full digital control of that
2:12
pressure profiling. So that's what this machine is just
2:15
amazing to be honest. Um a lot of people want to start to
2:19
compare this machine to what I have at home myself which is
2:22
the the GS3 but they are very different in how that they
2:26
work. So I'm going to come back to that in a minute. So this
2:29
machine is basically a digital version allowing you to control
2:34
your pressure profiling to the next level. It's just amazing.
2:38
So so let's go back and just check out a of the specs we've
2:42
got a fully saturated 1. 9 liter front brew boiler there
2:47
which is PID controlled so you can adjust that temperature to
2:51
whatever you like you've got your rear boiler which is 3. 6
2:54
liters that's going to run your hot water tap and your steamer
2:57
as well so that's those two sizes are a little bit bigger
3:01
than the GS3 with your hot tap you've got a mixer on here
3:05
which allows you to add some cold water in there and get it
3:08
right down to that perfect temperature you may want for
3:11
your tees or your long blacks and you've got your full long
3:15
steam arm which we've seen on a few other machines with this
3:18
side lever action so that's a pretty cool feature the machine
3:22
can be plumbed or you can use your three liter inbuilt water
3:26
tank if you're going to be looking at pressure profiling
3:28
you would definitely want to plumb that into mains so that
3:32
you've got a standard pressure that's coming through into the
3:36
machine then you can ramp up from that Now, if you've got a
3:41
huge bar pressure coming into the machine, you will need to
3:44
put a pressure limiting valve in to bring that down. So, that
3:47
will bring it down around that three bar to start with or if
3:50
you want to start at a much lower pressure, you will have
3:53
to reduce it further down so that the magnetic electric pump
3:58
inside this can actually then ramp up the pressure that you
4:01
choose. So, just keep that in mind if you are going to plumb
4:05
it in, you do have a baseline pressure to start with. With a
4:08
big machine like this, you do get a really big drip tray
4:11
which is great because when you start to pressure profile and
4:15
play a lot more you want to be able to have room for that
4:17
water to to be held and you can run that down to a drain with a
4:22
hose if you want on the front you've got your two gauges
4:25
there then nice and big so you can see what's happening you've
4:28
got your bar pressure for your steam on the bottom and then
4:32
you've got your pump pressure on the top now in some terms
4:35
those gauges are a little bit old school because then you've
4:38
got your high-resolution color screen here which is going to
4:42
tell you everything that you need to know about your
4:44
machine. The pressure as you're actually brewing it, how to
4:48
change different temperatures and settings. It's all done
4:51
through that interactive menu which is inbuilt to the
4:54
machine. So, you don't have to go and use it app or or have
4:57
another plug in or anything. It's just all inside the
5:00
machine which makes it super user friendly for anyone to
5:03
have a play with. In True Rocket Form, you get a
5:06
beautiful presented timber box with all goodies. You get three
5:10
handles. So, you get a single group, a double spout, and a
5:13
naked which is an extra that a lot of machines don't give you.
5:17
Um you've got your plumbing kit, a manual, the cleaning
5:20
cloth, a group head cleaning brush. Um I think that's about
5:25
it. Maybe a couple other little things in there. Hang on. Hang
5:28
on. Hang on. What else? I knew there's something else.
5:33
And you get a blind basket with some cleaning tablets as well
5:37
to get you started so the R Nine One does sit in the above the
5:40
$10, 000 coffee machine area which is competing with the GS3
5:45
and the slayer as well so you're definitely up that that
5:49
high end now when you start to compare them apples for apples
5:52
each manufacturer has really focused on doing something a
5:56
little bit different so what Rocket have focused on is being
6:00
able to do pressure profiling and have that super repeatable
6:04
so that's what excites me the most about this machine look I
6:08
love my GS3 but it's up to me to be able to repeat a profile
6:12
with that manual brew lever so when you look at the menu here
6:16
you've got five presets that you can have dialed into the
6:21
machine on that pressure profiling now they're labeled
6:25
very easily on the bottom right hand corner here if you just
6:27
tap it you go from A B C D E and there are your profiles and
6:33
you can load those up and select them very easily. If you
6:38
press it one more time, sorry twice you'll go to what's
6:44
called manual brew and what that allows you to do is you
6:48
can manually play with this lever the further you go the
6:52
obviously the more pump pressure it's going to apply to
6:55
your coffee bed it records that in a graph so digitally on the
7:00
front you can see that it'll start at three bar six come
7:03
back to three whatever you choose and once you finish that
7:06
recipe you can easily save it into one of those preset
7:10
settings and then you can repeat that time and time
7:12
again. When you activate your brew lever, not only does it
7:16
start to record the time which is a short timer. It's great.
7:19
It's also telling you how much mills of water that you're
7:22
you're pumping through. So, that is just cool data that any
7:26
geek is going to love when you start to play with this
7:29
machine. In the menu, it's really easy to navigate through
7:31
and start to adjust the time and the pressure that you're
7:35
going to apply to your coffee bed. So, you simply work your
7:38
way through the menu and you can pick say at 2 seconds can
7:41
start at three bar then 20 seconds change it up to three
7:45
or four or five bar whatever you like and then ramp it back
7:48
so you've got those time parameters and the pressure
7:50
parameters that you can play with for your particular recipe
7:53
it is a standard 10 amp power supply which is 1, 600 watts to
7:57
run those two boilers which is actually pretty low given how
8:01
much is going on in this machine and you get a full
8:04
twenty-four month warranty so that's fantastic it's good to
8:08
see some manufacturers giving that home user that X support
8:11
over more than 12 months because that's something that
8:14
we've had a lot of feedback that customers want that extra
8:17
support so what I'm going to do is we're going to brew a couple
8:20
of coffees I'm going to set it up and do a manual brew and
8:24
we'll be able to see that data happening on the screen then
8:27
we'll save it as a profile and then we'll go back use that
8:31
profile to make a second coffee and just show you how
8:34
repeatable and easy it is to make a beautiful coffee with
8:37
the R Nine One in the R91 kit you've got three baskets it looks like you
8:42
get a seven to nine gram, a 14 to 16 and the 20 and it happen
8:46
to be in this naked and you can see it's got the tapered edge
8:50
on it now we're looking at top of the range machines here with
8:54
pressure profiling we want to give it the best it possibly
8:56
can so I've grabbed myself a VST precision basket now we've
9:00
done a video on this specifically if you're looking
9:03
to minimize any sort of distributing and flow issues
9:07
the technology behind these baskets check out our other
9:11
videos and I reckon it's going to make the coffee much
9:14
better when we start to play with this pressure profiling.
9:17
So, we've got our 22 and a half grams of coffee. We're going to
9:21
pop it into our portafilter handle we're going to level it
9:27
out we've got a little flair screens and a bit of WDT so we
9:31
really do want to break up any of these clumps if you have a
9:34
look there so these clumps is are really going to be affected
9:40
by the water as it comes into the shop so getting our little
9:44
WDT breaking those up doing some low WDTing some metal and
9:53
then finishing it off with some high WDT we're then making sure
9:59
we've got an amazing prepared puck to make a nice even flow
10:05
of coffee we're going to use our NCD distributor tool here
10:09
as well couple of spins. I'm just going to use our automatic
10:14
tamper which is set to 14 kilos.
10:19
Great and we're going to pop in a flare pack screen as well
10:23
that helps that the water get more even onto the coffee bed
10:28
so look again really techy but imagine how big a drip is it's
10:32
going to cut one drip down to about maybe six or seven drips
10:36
and really get that water more evenly onto the coffee bed but
10:39
it's also going to stop that coffee from rising up when
10:42
we're playing with different pressures
10:47
We got our cup under. Tear off our scales. And I'm going to
10:51
watch this screen a little bit better here. So we're going to
10:54
start to brew. It's so finite this adjustment. Here we go.
10:59
We'll get it up to three bar.
11:07
Here we go. 3. 3 bar for 11 seconds. I want to ramp that up
11:11
to nine bar.
11:16
And then I'm going to bring it right back down to three bar
11:19
again just to finish off the shot
11:27
and just finishing off really gently there. Try not to
11:32
overextract watching my recipe here. So aiming for 45 grams of
11:40
in liquid weight.
11:46
And that is super responsive so I've managed to stop that at
11:50
45. 1 gram so that is a perfect two to one recipe for us
11:59
Now we can save that. So if we press and hold our star
12:08
and it says last profile has been saved. Great. So when
12:17
you've got a saved profile as it comes with five it's very
12:20
easy to go back in and change them so we can hit our ah
12:23
button in the middle and down the bottom right hand corner
12:26
here you've got your recipes and you can see at the top you
12:30
can navigate very easy through from A B C D and E they're your
12:35
5 profiles and on the left hand side you've got five time
12:40
stamps essentially that you can change and on your right is the
12:43
pressure that's going to be applied on those individual
12:45
time stamps so at time one at seven seconds we can either
12:50
increase that maybe to 7. 17. 2 seconds and as you navigate
12:55
down through these buttons you can change the different time
13:00
times on them and then come across to the other side and
13:05
start to change the bar pressure so as I did before I
13:08
had a a three bar and then maybe up to eight tapering back
13:13
down to as it says here five and let's ramp that right back
13:18
down to two bar to finish off for the last five seconds of
13:27
the brew
13:31
and then just hit the arrow the tick there and you've you've
13:35
saved so that profile is ready to go yeah the one thing I'm
13:40
not enjoying 100% is the responsiveness of the LCD
13:44
screen you've gotta get it in the exact spot to to make the
13:48
change and I think that's because in technology with
13:51
iPhones and everything we've got this amazing touchscreens
13:54
and they're they're pretty great they're super responsive
13:56
they haven't really made their way down to these first model
13:59
coffee machines that are starting to use this technology
14:02
so I'm sure that will progress with future models to be a much
14:06
better responsive navigation through the menu so I've been
14:10
able to make my own manual process and manual brew recipe
14:14
and profile recipe and then save it so all we have to do
14:19
now is lock in our handle pop in our cup tear it off and
14:25
simply just start the brew process and it's going to
14:28
follow that last recipe and while we've got that extra time
14:32
because I don't have to worry about it you can see that
14:35
profile coming up slowly up to three bar it's then going to go
14:39
right up to the nine bar that I got it to and then taper it
14:43
right off I got plenty of time that I can steam and be ready
14:46
to make an awesome latte There you go. It's starting to tape
14:54
it back off again. Check out the steam quality. Plenty of
15:00
steam pressure from that 3. 6 litre boiler. Absolutely wild
15:05
steam I'll be honest. Whoo. Here we go.
15:16
That's got a huge vortex there on that milk. That is so much
15:21
steam pressure. That's that's fantastic. Rest my milk. Get a
15:26
cloth to wipe that up. Clean up now you might notice that that
15:33
is only. 5 of a gram out and I reckon it's because I didn't
15:37
tear the glass properly but that is super close we've got a
15:42
full recipe that's been repeated we've got our
15:44
beautiful silky milk there ready to rock and roll look at
15:48
that that is just glossy it's the first time we've ever froth
15:51
with this as well so very impressed with it and that's
15:56
silky milk for sure
16:01
There you go and a little latte to finish.
16:10
That was really enjoyable apart from the mess up with the
16:16
brewing I'm I'm feeling it's a very accurate very precise
16:22
super responsive in that that magnetically controlled
16:26
pressure profile pump almost something we get it used to I
16:31
mean I'm I'm been using the GS3 and it's a bit of a manual
16:34
gauge but that was just so gentle it's so smooth it's not
16:40
noisy so you don't have a vibration pump obviously which
16:43
is quite noisy it's the gear pump that's in this the
16:46
magnetic drive pump is far quieter than the rotary pump
16:49
and it just seems super responsive. So, that that's a
16:55
real joy. It's it's beautiful to work with. I must admit. Um.
16:58
Hey, Luke, I've got a question for you. Yeah. Do you think you
17:02
would trade your GS3 in for this thing? I I'm not going to
17:07
answer that just yet but I'm very impressed. I I think this
17:11
is going to take pressure profiling to the next level for
17:14
people. Um I'll answer that question after I've had a
17:18
chance to play with it a little bit more. So anyway I hope
17:21
that's given you a good representation of what the R9
17:25
one rocket is about. It's tech specs and you know what you can
17:30
do with it. It's that is just super control super easy so
17:36
intuitive really for anyone that doesn't want to get super
17:40
techy but you've actually got amazing technology to work with
17:43
having a profile that you might be able to replicate from
17:47
someone that you know jump online and ask them for
17:49
particular coffee or a roaster like myself then we give you a
17:53
single origin to say we want X amount of grams coffee start
17:57
say our recipe 22 and 1/ 2 grams and maybe even a 40 gram
18:01
yield just to be less than that two to1 with a pressure profile
18:05
of three, six, 7, nine back to two. You know, we could you can
18:10
get all that data and just dial it in very easily and have a
18:14
beautiful coffee and a wonderful experience. So,
18:17
that's that's exciting. It really is. Anyway, thanks very
18:23
much for watching. Um if you've got a question about the Rnine
18:25
one, please chuck it down below. I'd love to answer that
18:28
one for you and I look forward to making a couple more videos
18:31
while we have this on loan. So, thanks again to Espresso
18:34
Company Australia for learning it to us. You definitely get me
18:38
a little bit out of my comfort zone you know playing with
18:43
something that's is so refined so nice and anyway I'm really
18:47
excited to play more with this machine and see what it can do
18:51
for a home user and love look forward to sharing that with
18:54
you soon anyway thanks very much for watching everyone
18:56
we'll catch you next time cheers.
0:42

5:20
cloth, a group head cleaning brush.
8:20
of coffees I'm going to set it up and do a manual brew and
8:24
we'll be able to see that data happening on the screen then
8:27
we'll save it as a profile and then we'll go back use that
8:31
profile to make a second coffee and just show you how
8:34
repeatable and easy it is to make a beautiful coffee with
8:37
the R91 in the R9 1 kit you got three baskets it looks like you
8:42
get a seven to nine gram, a 14 to 16 and the 20 and it happen
8:46
to be in this naked and you can see it's got the tapered edge
8:50
on it now we're looking at top of the range machines here with
8:54
pressure profiling we want to give it the best it possibly
8:56
can so I've grabbed myself a now we've
9:00
done a video on this specifically if you're looking
9:03
to minimize any sort of distributing and flow issues
9:07
the technology behind these baskets check out our other
9:11
videos and I reckon it's going to make the coffee much
9:14
better when we start to play with this pressure profiling.
