To begin assembly, start with the hopper. Make sure the latch on the bottom is closed to prevent any coffee beans from spilling out. Attach the hopper by aligning it with the lock and unlock symbols on the grinder, and secure it in place. Once the hopper is attached, you can insert the grinds tray at the front of the grinder. When it comes to the portafilter holders, it’s recommended to use the one that allows you to grind directly into the portafilter, as it offers a more hands-free experience. Adjust the holder height to ensure your portafilter sits securely by loosening the grub screws, positioning the holder correctly, and then tightening the screws again.
Next, connect the power supply to the side of the grinder and plug it in. The power switch is located discreetly under the left-hand side of the grinder, and once switched on, you're ready to start grinding. The La Marzocco Pico grinder is user-friendly, with three dosing buttons: one for a single dose, one for a double dose, and a manual option. To set your preferred grind dose, simply press and hold the button you want to program, adjust the grind time using the other buttons, and confirm your setting.
Finally, when it comes to dialing in the grind for your espresso, the front dial allows for easy adjustment. Turning it to the right makes the grind finer, while turning it to the left makes it coarser. It's advisable to adjust the grind while the motor is running to avoid jamming. Start by setting the grind finer and then make small adjustments based on the consistency of the grind. The goal is to achieve a grind that's not too coarse like sand, but not too fine like powder. Once you’ve set up the grinder and dialed in the grind, you’re ready to start making exceptional coffee, whether it’s a rich espresso or a smooth cappuccino.
