Inside the Lelit Factory: Innovation, Heritage, and Italian Craftsmanship
What makes a Lelit espresso machine different? It’s a blend of cutting-edge technology, family history, and a uniquely Italian approach to manufacturing. We recently toured the Lelit headquarters in Brescia, Italy, to see exactly how these world-class machines are built.
From their origins in high-end steam irons to their current status as a global leader in specialty coffee, here is a behind-the-scenes look at the Lelit process.

1. The "Kit Area": Precision from the Start
The assembly process begins in what Lelit calls the Kit Area. To avoid mistakes, every single machine has its own tray with a detailed drawing.
-
Error Prevention: Components that look identical might have different voltages. The tray system ensures that every part matches the specific code for the machine being built.
-
Vertical Warehouses: Because space is at a premium, Lelit uses massive vertical warehouses that double as automated lifts, transporting pre-assembled chassis to the production lines on the third floor.
2. Built by Detail-Oriented Hands
One of the most striking things about the Lelit production line is that it is staffed almost entirely by women.
-
The Philosophy: Lelit’s leadership believes that women tend to pay closer attention to the fine details required for high-end assembly.
-
Ergonomics: The lines are designed with the workers' well-being in mind. Machines move on timber rests and railways, meaning the workers never have to lift heavy equipment, preventing back strain and injury.
3. Rigorous Quality Control
At Lelit, "Quality Control" isn't just a buzzword—it's a multi-stage process:
-
Functional Testing: At the end of every line, specialized managers test each machine with actual water and coffee. (This is why you might find a tiny bit of coffee residue in your brand-new machine!)
-
Cooling Down: Machines pass through a temperature sensor. They cannot move to the packaging stage until they have cooled to a safe, specific temperature.
-
The Batch Test: Every day, random machines are pulled from the finished batches and re-tested entirely to ensure that the logic, accessories, and aesthetics are perfect before shipping worldwide.
4. From Steam Irons to Espresso Icons
Lelit didn't start with coffee. Their heritage is in professional steam ironing equipment, which still makes up 15% of their business today.
-
Dry Steam Patent: Lelit’s irons use a patented 32-chamber plate that produces "dry steam," allowing for a perfect finish in a single pass.
-
The "Bianca" Breakthrough: In 2017, Lelit applied their knowledge of steam and pressure to create the Bianca. By introducing a needle valve to control flow rather than just pressure, they disrupted the industry and made professional profiling affordable for the home user.
5. The Future: Lelit & Breville
Since joining the Breville Group in 2022, Lelit has combined its innovative spirit with a global infrastructure. This synergy is leading to exciting new releases, including the upcoming Steve grinder and the MaraX3, featuring the highly anticipated "Pagaia" technology.
Whether it’s the entry-level Anna or the flagship Bianca, every Lelit machine is a testament to the idea that you must respect the past while constantly looking toward the future.
