Cold brew coffee is a refreshing alternative to traditional hot brewing methods. The Puck Puck cold drip attachment for the AeroPress offers a unique, portable solution for making cold brew at home. At Artisti Coffee Roasters, we've put this innovative product to the test and are here to share our findings.
What is the Puck Puck?
The Puck Puck is a small, plastic attachment that turns your AeroPress into a cold drip system. Its portability sets it apart from larger, more traditional glass cold drip towers.
What You'll Need:
- AeroPress (bottom half only)
- Puck Puck cold drip attachment (with or without water vessel)
- Paper filter
- 38 grams of medium-ground coffee (we recommend our single-origin Yirgacheffe)
- 100 grams of ice
- 400 ml of chilled filtered water
- A container to catch the dripped coffee
- Puck Puck mobile app (optional, but highly recommended)
Setting Up and Using the Puck Puck:
- Prepare the AeroPress: Place a paper filter in the filter cap and attach it to the bottom of the AeroPress. Add the 38 grams of medium-ground coffee. Level the grounds.
- Attach the Puck Puck: Place the water dispersion sleeve on top of the coffee grounds. Attach the Puck Puck to the AeroPress and ensure it's closed (turned clockwise).
- Prepare the Water Vessel: If using the Puck Puck water vessel, fill it with 100 grams of ice and 400 ml of chilled filtered water (it will likely go slightly over the fill line due to the ice). If not using the vessel, ensure your chosen bottle fits the Puck Puck.
- Connect the Vessel: Connect the water vessel (or bottle) to the Puck Puck.
- Start the Drip: Using the Puck Puck app's drip counter (or manually), adjust the drip rate by turning the Puck Puck collar counter-clockwise. Aim for approximately 50 drips per minute.
- Brew Time: Allow the coffee to drip for 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Enjoy: Serve your cold brew as is, over ice, or with milk.
Pros:
- Portability: Small and easy to transport.
- Durability: Made of plastic, making it less fragile than glass cold drip systems.
- Affordability: More affordable than many traditional cold drip setups.
- Puck Puck App: The app is a valuable tool for any cold drip brewing.
Cons:
- Requires finding a suitable container to catch the dripped coffee.
- The water vessel is an additional purchase.
Puck Puck Hacks & Tips:
- Download the Puck Puck app for accurate drip counting.
- Use filtered water for the best flavor.
- Experiment with different grind sizes and coffee varieties.
- Clean the Puck Puck thoroughly after each use, being careful not to lose the diffuser.
Conclusion:
The Puck Puck cold drip attachment offers a convenient and effective way to enjoy cold brew at home or on the go. Its portability, ease of use, and affordability make it a great option for AeroPress users.
