While coffee has been a staple of the Burundi economy for decades, low prices and perceived lack of quality has seen poverty entrenched in its society. However, recently there has been a push to invest in high end production in hopes of seeing greater returns for its farmers. The red bourbon variety grown in Burundi produces high quality coffee with characteristics of dark fruit, blackcurrant and cacao. The coffee produced at Remera Hill washing station is a great example of this, processed in the natural method, it is complex and sweet, slightly jammy and full of ripe fruit flavours.
